From Global Stages to the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion: Domingo Hindoyan Named LA Opera's Next Music Director

After an extensive international search, LA Opera is thrilled to announce the appointment of Domingo Hindoyan—one of today’s most exciting conductors—as its next Music Director. The internationally acclaimed Venezuelan-Armenian conductor will begin a five-year term starting July 1, 2026, following the extraordinary two-decade tenure of Maestro James Conlon, who will step into the new role of Conductor Laureate.

Hindoyan made a memorable LA Opera debut in 2024 with Roméo et Juliette, earning immediate praise for his expressive artistry, deep musicality, and dynamic rapport with both orchestra and audience. Now, he becomes just the third music director in LA Opera’s history, joining the remarkable legacy of Kent Nagano and James Conlon.

Currently Chief Conductor of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, Hindoyan has led performances at many of the world’s premier opera houses, including the Metropolitan Opera, Vienna State Opera, Paris Opera, and Lyric Opera of Chicago. His versatility spans the concert stage as well, with recent appearances at the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Boston Symphony, and Cleveland Orchestra, among others.

Hindoyan also brings a rich discography, including recordings of Bruckner, Tchaikovsky, and Venezuela! Music from the Americas, highlighting his commitment to both classical tradition and innovative repertoire.

“Domingo is an artist of exceptional depth and imagination,” said Maestro Conlon. “I am proud to pass the baton to someone who shares my passion for opera as a spiritual and vital force.”

This announcement comes on the cusp of LA Opera’s 40th Anniversary Season and celebration of Conlon’s 20th and final season as LA Opera’s Richard Seaver Music Director, marking a powerful transition as the company continues to grow in ambition, reach, and resonance. As Hindoyan prepares to take the podium, audiences can expect an era defined by collaboration, innovation, and deep musical connection.
