Music Director James Conlon conducts a cast of hundreds in two free performances of the family-friendly opera at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels

(Los Angeles) February 24, 2025 — Next month, LA Opera's professional artists will collaborate with more than 300 amateur members of the Los Angeles musical community to present two free performances of Carla Lucero's The Three Women of Jerusalem (Las tres mujeres de Jerusalén) at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels. Conducted by Music Director James Conlon, the performances will take place on March 14 and 15.

Thanks to generous longtime support from the Dan Murphy Foundation, LA Opera is able to produce The Three Women of Jerusalem and offer it free of charge as a special gift to the greater Los Angeles community. LA Opera has presented annual community productions at the Cathedral led by Mr. Conlon since 2007.

Performers will include amateur singers of all ages and student instrumentalists from the greater Los Angeles community, along with members of the LA Opera Orchestra and professional vocal soloists including soprano Maria Elena Altany as Sacrifice, mezzo-soprano Meagan Martin as Love, mezzo-soprano Peabody Southwell as Purpose, bass Vinícius Costa as Pontius Pilate, soprano Alaysha Fox as Mary, tenor Ashley Faatoalia as Simon and countertenor Stephen Pitters as the Angel. The production is directed by Eli Villanueva.

Sung in Spanish with projected English translation, the opera tells a motivational and inspirational story based on the Passion narrative of the Eighth Station of the Cross, depicting the women who weep for Jesus as He is forced toward the crucifixion. The opera imagines what these unnamed women were like, showing the experiences of ordinary people sharing their compassion when confronted with evil. The story of the opera is inspired by the New Testament, but its theme of compassion and community is universal.

There will be two performances of The Three Women of Jerusalem at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels (555 W. Temple Street, Los Angeles, CA 90012).

Tickets are free of charge, but there is a handling fee of $1 per ticket.
