2023 Arts and Health Week Summit Review
International opera star Renée Fleming has been appointed as a Goodwill Global Ambassador by the World Health Organization (WHO). A tireless advocate for arts and health research, Renée was selected for her achievement and advocacy for improved health outcomes through creative means. The distinguished announcement was made as part of WHO's 75th Anniversary on May 22, 2023. As a Goodwill Ambassador, Renée “will promote the integration of arts into health-care systems, advocate for access to creative arts therapies, and champion the importance of artistic expression in improving health outcomes globally.” (World Health Organization)
Renée joined LA Opera as Advisor for Special Projects in the fall of 2021, helping to launch LA Opera’s inaugural Arts and Health Week Summit in 2022 in partnership with Los Angeles County and the World Health Organization. Her advocacy for arts and health has had an enormous impact on elevating the importance of this work globally and LA Opera is incredibly grateful to benefit from her expertise and passion. Renée delivered opening remarks at LA Opera’s second annual Arts and Health Week Summit on June 9, 2023, where she also participated in a conversation with Dr. Maria Rosario Jackson, Chair of the National Endowment for the Arts.
Renée joins a long list of WHO Goodwill Global Ambassadors who use their status and influence to draw attention to specific health issues impacting people’s lives and well-being. Renée will work alongside fellow international opera star Pretty Yende during the two-year term of this role. Join us as we celebrate these wonderful new appointees.
