James Callon
Praised for his “golden-toned tenor,” James Callon is rapidly distinguishing himself as a dynamic singer possessing the “emotional and gorgeous voice" of the romantic, full lyric tenor.
Though lauded for his “beaming strong voice” (San Jose Classical Music Examiner), Mr. Callon's ability to produce tenderly-spun high notes above the staff has shown his to be a voice of “rare beauty, compelling ardor, and...touching nuance.” (San Francisco Classical Voice).
After completing his undergraduate studies at the University of California at Irvine, Mr. Callon soon came to sing on the main stage for LA Opera, Tulsa Opera, Rogue Opera, and Opera San Jose, where he recently concluded a two-year residency. As Opera San Jose's resident tenor, Mr. Callon graced the stage in no less than eight full productions, including the critically acclaimed remount of Madama Butterfly in which “Resident tenor, James Callon, is a perfectly awful B.F. Pinkerton (in the best way possible) with an amazing voice, as usual.” (San Jose Metblogs).
Additional mainstage credits include debuts with LA Opera, Tulsa Opera, and Rogue Opera as Giuseppe, Gastone, and Alfredo in La Traviata, respectively; Rinuccio in Gianni Schicchi with Intimate Opera; Tamino in The Magic Flute as a guest artist with Biola University; Howard Boucher in Dead Man Walking with Tulsa Opera; Nemorino in L'Elisir d'Amore with Rogue Opera; and Rodolfo in La Boheme with West Edge Opera. As a resident tenor with Opera San Jose, Mr. Callon also performed the roles of Nadir in The Pearl Fishers, Manrico in Il Trovatore, Fenton in Falstaff, the Witch in Hansel and Gretel, Don Ottavio in Don Giovanni and Eisenstein in Die Fledermaus, in which, “Lyric tenor, Mr. Callon, handles both the acting and singing chores with equal aplomb, displaying a refined tone and an affable comic sense.” (Gregory M. Mr. Callon is a former member of the Tulsa Opera Resident-Artist Program, where he appeared in Bernstein's Trouble in Tahiti, an abridged touring version of The Elixir of Love, and sang the role of Mr. Owen in Dominick Argento's surrealistic Postcard from Morocco.
An accomplished concert artist, Mr. Callon has sung with various symphonies and chamber groups. Recent concert credits include: Beethoven's 9th Symphony with Cypress College, Schubert's Nachthelle for the Jacaranda Music Society, Handel's Messiah with the LA Master Chorale, and Mozart's Requiem with the LA Philharmonic.
