He directed such diverse films as The Goodbye Girl, Footloose and Pennies from Heaven. He began his career as a dancer, and at 23 became a choreographer for American Ballet Theatre and for the Broadway stage. He directed a number of plays before entering film and brought several Neil Simon works to the screen, including The Sunshine Boys, for which George Burns won an Academy Award, and California Suite, for which Maggie Smith won an Academy Award. Other credits include Steel Magnolias, Goodbye Mr. Chips, Funny Lady and Play It Again, Sam.
