SECONDARY IN SCHOOL OPERAÂ
Secondary students break the mold of traditional school productions as they turn their school into a world-class opera house.
Arts and education meet at our In School Opera residencies. Ten weeks learning from LA Opera artists fly by as students sharpen their performance skills and perform a full-scale opera (and master some Common Core and Visual and Performing Arts standards, too).
This fall we present The Wreck of the Miranda, an original youth opera commissioned by LA Opera Connects, written by composer Nathan Wang and librettist Matthew Leavitt.
The Wreck of the Miranda is set in a seaside town in Southern California. When the residents of their town begin to fall mysteriously ill, eco-conscious high school student Eva becomes suspicious that a recent shipwreck is to blame. She has to learn to put aside her differences and work together with popular student Angela to change the tide of public opinion in a town that's propped up entirely by the fishing industry. Together with their school, played by the chorus of students, they must conduct research, collect data and confront the mega-corporation to hold them responsible.
Applications are now closed. Check back next year for information about our 2025/26 season.
